What is Art?
I ran across another quote on Pinterest today although I didn't see an author. "Earth without art is just Eh."
How true is that? Just look around you. Art is such a big part of our lives! Take advertisements for example. Do you stop to read the ad without a picture, or do you stop to read the ad with the picture that catches your eye? That is us as adults. What about your young children who can't read yet?
What makes a great children's book? It isn't the words. They may be important, but they don't make the book great. While we read a book, our kids are studying the pictures. If we have a book without pictures, we've lost our children's attention already! I don't care how moving a story; if you can't captivate your targeted audience. then it is not a great book. This quote caught my attention as an author but also on a more personal level.
Our planet is truly a work of art! We sing about it, "spacious skies . . . amber waves of grain . . . purple mountains majesty . . . shining sea." Surely no one questions that Earth is absolutely breathtaking, yet everyday people deny seeing the existence of God in the beauty of Earth. That is hard enough for me to understand, but then they start looking at the similarities between various creatures such as modern reptiles and dinosaurs or even monkeys and humans.
How many of you can look at a piece of art and automatically identify it by author. It is hard to see a van Gogh and not immediately have van Gogh come to mind. Jackson Pollock, good heaven's is there anyone who paints like that man? The list goes on and on. The same holds true in writing. We buy books by familiar authors because we like their style. I have caught myself starting a new book without paying much attention to the author then turning back shortly into the book, because it sounds just like so and so's work. It almost always turns out to be the author in question.
From one piece of art to another, from one book to another similarities tell us that they were created by the same hand. Why then can people not look at the similarities from creature to creature and know they were created by the same hand. People look at these similarities and thing evolution; I look at these similarities and think one creator, one true God.
